Real Monarchs and Chelsea FC Split Points

Tuesday, July 19, 2022) - Real Monarchs (0-0-1, 2 points) drew 2-2 with Chelsea FC of the English Premier League 2, splitting the points. The squad also received a bonus point for winning the penalty shootout.

In the first meeting between the two clubs in history, Chelsea got out to the faster start, producing a flurry of early opportunities before scoring in the third minute. Both teams started exchanging blows within each other's final third as the first half went on, and the Monarchs eventually got back into the game in the 32nd minute when At the top of the box, midfielder Pedro Fonseca's through ball found Tyrone Mondi. Mondi aligned himself before unleashing a right-footed shot that found the upper left corner of the goal. The game was still tied at 1 after the goal as the Monarchs maintained their composure and continued to advance, but they were unable to capitalize on any of their subsequent dangerous opportunities.

RSL Homegrown midfielder Diego Luna attempted to beat second-half goalkeeper Eddie Beach after the break, but his half-field shot missed to the left. Real Monarchs started to gain momentum and control most of the ball. In the 57th minute, after receiving a penalty kick, the Monarchs attempted to grab the lead. However, Beach was able to spread out and reach Luna's shot, blocking it and forcing it toward a corner.

With a perfect display of skill and precision, Benjamin Elliot's dribble through and past numerous Monarchs players gave Chelsea FC the lead once more in the 67th minute. However, the Monarchs would not stay down for long as Fonseca was brought down by the Chelsea goalie inside the area, leading to the Monarchs being given another penalty kick. The score was tied at 2-2 when Fonseca advanced and buried his shot in the goal.

Both teams made a strong effort to regain the lead, with Chelsea coming close to scoring the game-winning goal in the 87th minute. Omari Hutchinson, a forward, sliced between several Monarchs defenders inside.
